Glossary

Adrenal Glands, Adrenalin

A pair of endocrine glands that are situated close to the kidneys and secrete adrenalin and corticosteroids. Adrenalin is a hormone (q.v) that increases the rate of blood circulation, breathing and carbohydrate metabolisation in preparation for exertion. Corticosteroids have various metabolic functions including the suppression of inflammation and swelling.

Amino Acids

A group of about 20 organic compounds that form the basic constituents of proteins.

Archetype, Archetypal arena

"Archetypes are inherited blueprints of apprehension and action for situations of universal import. Using its great numinosity, the archetype attracts unconscious contents to itself, which it manipulates into a symbolic re-presentation of its archetypal message and propels into consciousness. Great emotion mobilises the archetype, and the archetypes use their ability to inspire emotion to attract unconscious contents to them, which they then shape into their pattern or image."

- from "That Synching Feeling"

The archetypal arena is the domain of the archetype. It is similar in nature to, and is a resonant counterpart of, the morphogenetic field. Believed to be identical in each individual the archetypal arena (also known as the 'collective unconscious') is a field of reference in which we all participate equally. Part of the function of the Template is to revitalise this frame of reference through the introduction of conscious points of behavioural reference, new archetypes.

Biocircuitry, Circuitry, Circuits

Throughout the Template, 'biocircuitry' refers to a set of electromagnetic circuits which, when properly integrated, connect humankind with the energetic nature of the cosmos. The Template model proposes that, through a variety of means, these circuits have become disconnected and that to reconnect them - as is achieved by the Template ceremonies - is to reconnect consciously with our own evolution and the governing mechanism of the universe.

"The energetic nature of consciousness that fosters all life is integrated into the Human heart/body/mind via biocircuitry. Circuitry is the delivery system that integrates this Source Intelligence, translating the electromagnetic life-force into the bioinformational matrix that is the vibratory infrastructure of the Human hologram"

"The circuitry does not begin and end around the Human energy field. Each circuit is spherical and intersects with another spherical field of conscious energy, which, in turn, interacts with another, as part of an electromagnetic intelligence system that encompasses all - from the subatomic to the multi-universal, the wheels within wheels."

- from "The Template; A Holonomic Model of Transcendence" (p. 21)

Cerebral Cortex

The outer layer of the brain consisting of nerve cells and the pathways that connect them. The cerebral cortex plays a central role in thinking as well as many other complex functions such as perception, language, memory & consciousness itself. In many ways the functions of the cortex define Homo sapiens.

Chakras

"Dense concentrations of energy located in the core of our etheric matrix."

- from "The Journey to the Sacred Garden"

"Chakras are swirling wheels of light and colour, vortices of flowing energy which sustain us energetically, adding to and vitalising our life force."

- from "Ambika's guide to Healing and Wholeness"

"Some doctrines postulate the existence of seven major chakras, some of thirteen. Others expound the significance of sub-chakras, of which the third eye has seven. It is the aim of the Template model to honour all of this knowledge as many facets of the same jewel. However, for our purposes we distil the system to a simple basic form and focus primarily on the chakras as a whole system of energy translation. The chakras are holographic interdimensional portals that link the body system from one dimension of expression to another. "

- from "The Template; A Holonomic Model of Transcendence" (p.183-184)

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a monatomic alchohol found in fat and animal oils. Synthesised in the liver and supplied by diet, cholesterol is a precursor chemical for the adrenal and sex hormones and is central to the synthesis of vitamin D.

Circadian Rhythm

Cycle occurring over 24 hour periods even in the absence of fluctuations in levels of light.

Cortex

The outer layer of an organ or other structure such as the brain, kidneys or bone. The inner layer is called the medulla

Corticosteroids

Aldosterone & cortisol. Steroid substances produced as part of the function of the adrenal glands. These hormones are produced from cholesterol and are influential in many essential processes which include:

The reduction of allergic and inlammatory reactions are also part of the function of these versatile substances.

DNA

Deoxyribonucleic acid, a long double stranded molecule housed in the nucleus of each and every cell. Dna is the chemical component of genes that informs the production of proteins & enzymes which are the basis of complex cellular entities. Dna also contains the information necessary to create a duplicate copy of itself.

Dna uses a messenger chemical, mRNA or messenger ribonucleic acid, to transmit its code from the nucleus to the main body of the cell, the cytoplasm. The chemical signal carried from the cell's control centre, the nucleus, to its production unit, the cytoplasm, is a code that informs the structure of the enzymes and other proteins which, in turn, control chemical reactions and signalling processes within the cell. The mRNA code is translated, in the cytoplasm, into an arrangement of amino acids that are identified by a third chemical, also produced in the nucleus, called transfer ribonucleic acid, or tRNA.

The tRNA engages with the specific sequences of amino acids required by the mRNA and transfers them to an assembly point, within the cytoplasm, known as a ribosome. The sequence of amino acids is bonded chemically before the tRNA disengages from both the mRNA and the newly synthesised amino acid. A new molecule of protein has been successfully produced. The result of this complete process is a protein molecule and unchanged molecules of mRNA and tRNA. The messenger and transfer molecules can be used many times to extract more amino acids and make more molecules of the same protein.

Each and every protein is produced directly from the original genetic code duplicated (by the mRNA) in the nucleus. Proteins encompass the building blocks of the structure of cells, any chemicals the cells may secrete, and special messenger molecules such as hormones that direct particular manufacturing processes in the cytoplasm; thus, at a cellular level, proteins - chains of amino acids that form enzymes and other components of the cell - direct the stages of germination, growth and reproduction of the whole organism.

Electromagnetic Spectrum, Electromagnetic Energy

A rapidly alternating field of electricity and magnetism that travels in waves through space. Radio waves, radar, light waves, x-rays, gamma rays and cosmic rays make up the entire spectrum and differ only in the frequency of their oscillation. Light is in the middle of the spectrum and is that tiny part of the electromagnetic spectrum that can be perceived with the eyes (less than 3%) plus infrared and ultraviolet. Every star and planet broadcasts its own unique electromagnetic signature. All physical items are expressions of light frequency as substance.

Endocrine Glands, Endocrine System

A set of seven glands which secrete hormones directly into the blood stream. These are: the pineal, pituitary, thyroid, thymus, pancreas, gonads and adrenals. The hypothalamus is not actually a gland but is an important part of endocrine function.

"The endocrine system is the sacred interface between the life directive transmitted from Source and the Human manifestation of that directive on all levels."

- from "The Template; A Holonomic Model of Transcendence"

(See also The Human Endocrine System)

Exocrine Glands

Glands that secrete hormones, enzymes etc into systems within the body other than the blood, or into the environment. Many glands have both an endocrine and an exocrine function.

Glands

Several different structures within the body each of which secretes specific chemical compounds either into the body or into the environment surrounding the body. The Template is specifically concerned with the endocrine glands.

Geometry

Geometry is the means by which number unfolds into space. Sacred geometry is that set of specific geometric rules which governs the growth and bonding of all systems.

Gonads

Organs that produce a male or female cell, capable of uniting with a similar cell of the opposite sex to form a fertilised ovum, which then divides to give rise to an embryo. These organs are the testes in the male and the ovaries in the female.

Hologram

3d image resulting from the process of holography .

"The hologram concept states that every piece [of the hologram] is an exact representation of the whole and can be used to reconstruct the entire hologram."

-from Hands of Light

Holography, Holographic

"A method of lenseless photography [devised by Dennis Gabor] in which the wavefield of light scattered by an object is recorded on a plate as an interference pattern. When the photographic record - the hologram - is placed in a coherent light beam like a laser, the original wave pattern is regenerated and a three dimensional image appears. (Because there is no focusing lense, the plate appears as a meaningless pattern of swirls. Any piece of the hologram will reconstruct the entire image.)"

- from The Holographic Paradigm

"Karl Pribram states that the brain employs a holographic process to abstract from a holographic domain that transcends time and space."

- from Hands of Light

Holon, Holonomics

Derived from holo-, whole, and -nomy, law or principle pertaining to, holonomy refers to the law or principle governing whole systems. As a descriptive term holonomy refers to every subsystem and supersystem in the universe as a dynamic interwoven web, transcending partial or analytic definition.

Homeostasis

The tendency towards a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by the biological functions of living organisms.

Hormones

Substances produced by the endocrine system to regulate or stimulate the action of specific cells or tissues.

Hypothalamus

A part of the forebrain that coordinates the activity of the pituitary which is the main organ within the endocrine system. The hypothalamus is central to the regulation of body temperature, weight, blood pressure, fluid balance, appetite and sexual behaviour. It can also be said to be the physical basis of the emotions.

Insulin

Endocrine hormone whose two main actions are to increase the rate at which sugar is withdrawn from the blood & passed to tissues, and to decrease the rate at which sugar is added to the blood by the liver. Insulin also manages glucose levels by preventing glucose from forming in the liver and increasing stores of glycogen (a precursor chemical to glucose) when increasing the rate of glucose use in the body's tissues. Insulin stimulates the formation of protein in muscle, as well as stimulating the formation of fat and preventing its breakdown.

Kinesiology

An holistic system of healing which uses muscle testing to assess and rebalance the energy system of the body, thereby bringing about lasting change for the better in the physical body.

Lymphocytes

White blood cells that are central to the function of the human immune system and occur in three main forms: NK or natural killer cells, T cells that are matured in the thymus and B cells which are thought to mature in bone marrow. T-lymphocytes launch a protein-based response whereas B-lymphocytes secrete antibodies. Both B & T cells retain a memory of previous infections to enable rapid response should that infection reoccur.

Medulla, Medulla oblongata

The inner layer of an organ or other structure such as the brain or the adrenal glands , the inner layer is called the cortex. The medulla oblongata is the point at which the spine enters the skull and connects with the brain.

Melatonin

A hormone secreted by the pineal gland which is thought to be central to governing reproductive cyles. Research indicates that melatonin may prevent damage by some classes of carcinogen, halting the mechanism by which they cause cancer. As an antioxidant, this hormone may reduce damage caused by some manifestations of Parkinson's disease , reduce the occurrence of cardiac arrythmia and increase longevity. Melatonin is capable of enhancing T-cell production as well as stimulating T-cell response. It is also reported that melatonin can increase the vividness and frequency of dreams.

Metabolism, metabolic

Physical and chemical processes essential to life and activity.

Morphogenetic Field

A source of inherited knowledge that is accessible to an entire race as the dna is a source of information accessible to an entire biological system. In essence the morphogenetic field might be described as the macrocosmic counterpart of microcosmic dna.

"Rupert Sheldrake, in his book 'A New Science of Life', proposes that all energy systems are regulated not only by known energy and material factors but also by invisible organising fields. These fields are causative because they serve as blueprints for form and behaviour. These fields have no energy in the normal sense of the word because their effect reaches beyond the time and space barriers normally applied to energy. That is, their effect is just as strong at a distance as it is at close range.

'According to this hypothesis, whenever one member of a species learns a new behaviour, the causative field for the species is changed, however slightly. If the behaviour is repeated for long enough, its 'morphic resonance' affects the entire species. Sheldrake called this invisible matrix a 'morphogenetic field'; from 'morph'; 'form' and 'genesis'; 'coming into being'. The action of this field involves 'action at a distance' in both space and time. Rather than form being determined by physical laws outside of time, it depends on morphic resonance across time.'

- from Barbara Ann Brennan's Hands of Light

Pancreas

A large endocrine gland situated behind the stomach. Part of the pancreas' function is to secrete insulin and glucagon into the blood stream. Glucagon & insulin are parts of the process that metabolise carbohydrates and regulate the amount of glucose in the blood.

Pineal

A small mass of tissue shaped like a pine cone situated in the centre of the brain and part of the endocrine system. The pineal is partly made up of light sensitive cells and plays a major part in sexual development at puberty. After puberty this organ typically becomes atrophied.

Pituitary

The pituitary is a pea-sized gland that is attached to the base of the brain. It is the major organ within the endocrine system.

Prana

Universal animating energy: the basic constituent and source of all life. As breath is the fuel for consciousness, so prana is fuel for the endocrine system.

Pranic Causeway

Tube or column that runs concurrently with the spine. The causeway contains a series of nodal receptors that represent the whole endocrine system and are a link between the energetic Source of Creation and individual endocrine organs.

Proteins

A group of organic compounds composed of one or more chains of amino acids. Proteins are an essential part of all organisms, especially as structural components of body tissues such as hair, muscle & bone and as enzymes and antibodies. Enzymes are catalysts that stimulate specific responses within a bio-organism.

Resonant, resonance

Resonance is an increase in the amplitude of vibration within a system by an external cause. The strings of an instrument will vibrate, through resonance, as the result of a remote impact or sound. Most structures - animate and inanimate - vibrate at natural resonant frequencies when disturbed. The application of an outside force can equal the vibrational frequency of a structure and may then double and redouble this value. This kind of physical resonance can be used to dissolve kidney stones without the need for invasive surgery. On occasion natural resonance is able to impair the function of large, engineered structures such as suspension bridges.

'Resonance' is also often used to denote a complex relationship in which objects or systems are connected by similarities of frequency, though the frequencies expressed are from different 'levels' of the system. A specific illustration of this general principle might be the relationships between a single musical note and its counterparts one octave above and below. As a study of music quickly demonstrates, frequency relationships are defined by geometry . This subtle geometric connection gives rise to, and is sometimes described as, resonance.

Symbiosis, Symbiotic

Mutually beneficial interaction between different organisms living in close physical association. At the root of the Template model is the knowledge that the entire holon was designed as a symbiotic whole and it is to this state that we, and the holon, are slowly returning.

Thymus

Situated in the lower neck/upper thorax, the thymus is an endocrine gland which is central to the functioning of the immune system through the production of specific white blood cells known as T-cells.

Thyroid

A large endocrine gland which controls growth and development by governing overall metabolic (q.v) rates. The thyroid is situated in front of the windpipe at the base of the neck.

Xiphoid Process

Sword shaped section of cartilege at the lower end of the sternum, which is not attached to any ribs and gradually ossifies during adult life.
